PUTRAJAYA: A new curriculum will be introduced at the primary school level in 2010 to make it more holistic and less examination-oriented.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said this would replace the existing primary school integrated curriculum (KBSR), which was first introduced in 1983 and subsequently reviewed in 2000.

“The new curriculum will be based on six key areas to produce holistic individuals,” he told reporters after releasing the third report card based on the National Education Blueprint 2006-2010.

These six areas, he added, were communication, spiritual attitude and values, humanitarianism, science and technology literacy, physical and aesthetics, and personal development.

Hishammuddin said the implications of the new curriculum would include changes in the time table, syllabus and curriculum, while teachers will be trained to become more multi-specialised.

The emphasis in Years One and Two, he added, would be on ensuring pupils mastered reading, writing, arithmetic and reasoning skills, scientific and ICT knowledge, and nurturing creativity.

In Years Four, Five and Six, he said the emphasis would be on acquiring more complex skills and knowledge.

Hishammuddin said the ministry was also transforming the national assessment system, moving from a centralised examination to a school-based assessment.

Suggestions, he added, which were being studied include creating a database of students’ development, reducing the number of examination papers and subjects, and assessing based on semesters.

He said the main of the transformation was to make learning fun and to move away from an examination-oriented environment.

The ministry, he added, was also transforming technical and vocational education to make it more relevant and attractive to st

State Police Commissioner Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said police had mounted a massive manhunt for two other suspects who had fled into a jungle on Wednesday.

As the fugitives might have been injured, he appealed to private clinics to report to police if anyone was seeking treatment for injuries.

The other three men, killed at the 38th kilometre of Jalan Rambungan, Matang, were in their 30s.

“Police seized a pistol, 10 bullets, two parang (machetes), a knife, a screwdriver and a face mask from them,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters at Jalan Bahruddin here.

DCP Mohmad said two Indonesian passports were found on the dead men. The third man did not carry any personal documents.

He said initial investigations revealed that the group could have been involved in six other armed robberies in Petra Jaya area here recently.

On the latest incident, he said police opened fire after one of the men pulled out a pistol and charged at them during a raid launched after a public tip-off.

DCP Mohmad said the suspected robbers, who were on foot, were believed to have targeted a bungalow but had turned away after finding out it had a security guard.

He said the group could have been working with local accomplices, who had provided the car to take them around to commit crimes.

Examiners unhappy with date of meeting
By SIMRIT KAUR

educate@thestar.com.my
PETALING JAYA: Teachers who will be marking Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination scripts are unhappy that their Deepavali plans will be disrupted this year.
They have been asked to attend a three-day examiners coordination meeting called for by the Malaysian Examinations Syn¬dicate (MES) from Oct 24 to 26, which will end just a day before Deepavali on Oct 27.
Hindu teachers affected said they would refuse to become examiners this year unless the dates are changed.
“It is not possible for us to do our Deepavali preparations and attend the meeting at the same time as it will last from 8am to 4pm over three days,’’ said an affected teacher in Kedah who has been marking scripts for four years.
She added that although MES had not officially informed them of the dates, they had received an SMS from the chief examiner.
“How can MES be so insensitive when choosing the dates for the meeting,’’ she said, adding that four of the 10 teachers in her group had decided to withdraw. Most of them would be marking English language scripts.
National Union of the Teaching Profession secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said that it had received several complaints from teachers across the country on the scheduling of the PMR examiners coordination meeting.
“It is a shame if the teachers decide to withdraw as MES will be losing the services of many experienced examiners,” she said.
When contacted, a MES official said that the Oct 24 to 26 dates given were only a guideline.
“All chief examiners can use their discretion to hold the meeting on another day. “In fact, the examiners need only meet for a day if they can conclude their business,” he added.

Ipoh offers land to factory

IPOH: The state has offered a 0.8ha plot of land to a local manufacturer to encourage it to build its new factory in Lahat and not in Thailand.
Ipoh Datuk Bandar Roshidi Hashim said the move, to offer Ipoh City Council land to Yew Lee Pacific Manufacturer Sdn Bhd, would help generate growth for the local economy.
He said it would be a loss for the country if the manufacturer were to set up its new factory in Songkhla, Thailand.
“The company has plans to expand to Thailand as 45% of its exports go there,” he told reporters after visiting the factory here yesterday.
Pointing out that the manufacturer needed some 0.8ha plot of land to build its new plant, Roshidi said: “We have a 3.24ha plot of land in Lahat that we can offer and I hope the manufacturer will consider staying here to expand their business.”
He said the manufacturer had given his commitment to stay put if the land offered was suitable.
Council officers and representatives of Yew Lee Pacific Manu-facturing would conduct a survey on the land soon, he added.
Yew Lee Pacific Manufacturer director Ang Lee Seng said the new factory would cost about RM5mil to build.
The factory is set to provide about 50 jobs to the people here.
Apart from selling its products locally, the manufacturer exports industrial brushes and brooms to China, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Fascinating Ramadan experience for tourists

By BAVANI M.

THE aromatic smell of baked cockles mingled with the spicy roasted chicken wings and sweet smell of fried chicken greeted the foreign visitors to the Jalan Raja Alang’s Ramadan bazaar in Kampung Baru.

Needless to say they were impressed. Not so much with the food but the kind hospitality and the smile exuded by the kampung folks who were eking out a living at bazaar touched the hearts of the visitors.

Patrick Jahns from Germany was so impressed that he said that we would like to come back to work and live in Malaysia for good.

“It’s a lovely place, lovely people and great food,’’ he told StarMetro.

Jahns said that he had visited many bazaars in KL during the Ramadan month and found them all very fascinating and delightful.

“The food is so delicious and you can get them 24 hours a day. There is just so much to explore here,’’ added the 22-year-old.

Greg Boyd from California said he only learnt about Ramadan when he came to Malaysia. “It’s a whole new exciting experience here, he said as he bought a couple of sticks of satay from a nearby stall.

Elena Shim from Sabah heard about the famous Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa and wasted no time queuing to get a packet.

Jahns, Boyd and Shim were a part of a group of 17 people who are members of the CouchSurfing project, an international, Internet-based hospitality service.

Its core aim of the project is that member’s host one another at their homes.

But clearly it’s not just about getting free accommodations as the project is more on cultural exchange. The group picked up loads of information on Malaysian culture during their stay here and from their visits to the many different sites in the city.

After an hour at the bazaar, the group – armed with local delights like Roti Jala, fried meehoon, roasted chicken and bubur lambuk – headed to the KLCC park to break fast under the stars.
