TRISHAWMEN TOLD TO PULL THEIR WEIGH
MALACCA, JULY 23: Trishawmen here have been urged to pull their weight in a month-long celebration to mark Malacca’s inclusion in Unesco’s World Heritage Sites list.
The trishaw pullers will play a key role in bringing tourists to historic sites during the celebrations which are set to run from Aug 1 until National Day.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the trishaw pullers must prepare themselves to face the expected mass influx of tourists into Malacca beginning next month.
He said this at a seminar organized by the Malacca Town Council for some 170 trishaw pullers. One hundred and seventy-three trishaw pullers will help start the celebration, called “Malacca Town, The World Heritage Town” by participating in a night parade on the first day.
During the seminar, service providers were urged to improve their interpersonal and communications skills, deliver the best service they can and be always be hospitable to tourists.
“The trishaw pullers will be given a guide book, in Malay and English, which they will required to keep throughout the celebrations for their and the tourists’ convenience,” he said.
Mohd Ali said with more than 2.98 million tourists expected to arrive in Malacca in the coming months, trishaw rides would help boost tourism industry in the state.
Comment:
In my opinion, trishawmen should work as hard as they can to raise tourism in Malaysia. Trishawmen are told to pull their weight to mark Malacca’s inclusion in Unesco’s World Heritage Sites list. They should be given a guide book to improve their English language. And they will required to keep throughout the celebration for their and the tourists’ covenience.

NO ALCOHOL AT EVENTS WITH MUSLIMS
SHAH ALAM, JULY 23: Selangor Pas commissioner Datuk Dr Hassan Mohamed Ali has described the objection to the serving of alcohol at the Chelsea-Malaysia football match on Monday as “a wake up b
He said the objection should drive home the message that organizers must take into account the sensitivities of all parties.
The menteri besar (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim) has made his stand and explained that there will be no alcohol served or sold.
“The objection should serve as a reminder for organizers of similar programmes in the future,” said Hassan who is state executive councilor for Islamic Affairs, Malay Culture, Infrastructure and Public Amenities at a press conference after the closing of Selangor Astronomy Convention on Monday.
Selangor Pas Youth recently brought out the issue of excluding alcohol at events where Muslims would be present.
It was reported that the match sponsors were organizing an online competition that offered grandstand tickets and entry to the hospitality tent outside the stadium where there would be a free flow of beer. Heineken has since said that the pre-match event was for non-Muslims guests.
Comment:
In this case, I think the objection to the serving of alcohol at the Chelsea-Malaysia football match cannot be the issue. We must handle it properly. Everybody should be understanding and this means there is co-operation between Muslims and non-Muslims. We must not blame each other and this case cannot be seen to each part only. We also must take account the sensitivities of all parties.
20 YEARS FOR SEX ASSAULT ON 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL
KUANTAN, JULY 23: A 47-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to 20 years’ jail and 20 strokes of the rotan on a charge of raping a young girl on Christmas Day two years ago.
K. Kamalason, a labourer in a timber company, pleaded guilty. He attacked the girl, then aged 5, at the Bukit Setongkol Chinese cemetery at 6.45 pm on Dec 25, 2006.
The offence under section 376 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and up to 24 strokes of the rotan upon conviction.
Sessions Court judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain ordered the sentence to start from yesterday.
Kamalason, who stood in the dock wearing a wearing a white T-shirt and tracksuit, showed no emotion when the , leaving sentence was passed.
Eleven people gave evidence at the trial as Kamalason, who was unrepresented, had initially pleaded not guilty.
According to the facts of the case, he had coaxed the girl into taking a ride on his motorcycle to a nearby sundry shop on the pretext of buying her sweets.
Instead, he took her to the Bukit Setongkol Chinese burial ground here, hit her head with a hard object and shoved a piece of wood into her private parts.
He then left, leaving the victim sprawled on the ground.
The traumatized girl suffered excessive bleeding.
Police arrested Kamalason at his house two days later.
Yesterday, Kamalason pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he had to support his wife, ageing mother and two children, aged two and six.
However, deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud pressed for a deterrent sentence.
“ He has ruined a girl’s life along with her family’s as they will find it difficult to forget the incident.”
Ahmad Fadhli said offences against young children were on the rise, citing the case of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin who was sexually abused and killed.
He submitted reports of similar argument that Kamalason should be given the maximum punishment.
Comment:
Nowadays, there is sexually abused and killed that had happened from day to day. Girls was suffered in this case. Why all of this was happened towards them? As adults, we should protect them. They’re so poor. This is the difficult time to the girl family’s to forget the incident. And, parents should be aware with all of this and make sure your children are always with you.
